China Seminar in a new joint venture with the Shilin Foundation present a lecture on Ming (1368-1644) China:
'Ming Martial Arts: Characteristic Features and Problems of Research'
by PD Dr. Kai Filipiak (University of Leipzig)
The paper deals with characteristic features of martial arts during the Ming dynasty. Starting from the question of what martial arts is or seems to be, the paper provides an introduction into types of sources, discusses important trends of martial arts development during the Ming dynasty and explains the social origins of martial arts practice. It will be shown that the development is characterized by aspects of differentiation, specialization, and regionalization of martial arts.
Using the example of the military, it can be demonstrated that the practice of martial arts was closely related to its purpose that defined the performance.
Finally, the paper presents different social groups practicing martial arts for different reasons. The last section will fix some problems in Ming martial arts research today.
The lecture will be held Wednesday 24 April at the Arsenaal building, in the Green Room (inside the East Asian Library), from 15:00 to 17:00. Afterwards we will go for a drink at the English Pub “North End”. Admission is free and open to everyone!

Shilin 3.2 (September 2012) is out!
We are happy to announce that our new September issue is out.
In this issue you may once more find a number of very interesting China-related articles. Gea Ardesch takes us on a tour of Chinese art around the turn of the 20th century, and critically evaluates whether Western techniques imported from abroad were indeed influencing the visual landscape in those heady days of early globalisation. Looking at the rise of menglong 朦胧 poetry, which became popular in the early 1980s, Pieter van Sloten discusses the politics of literature in modern China. Finally, Marijn de Wolff dives into the grammar of Southern Mǐn 閩南, comparing it with more commonly studied Chinese languages such as Mandarin and Cantonese.
In addition to this Barend Noordam and Tabitha Speelman have provided Shilin with its first two book reviews ever. We sincerely hope that we can continue to publish book reviews in our next issues, so if you are interested in publishing one with us, do not hesitate to contact us at editor@shilin.nl!

Goodbyes and new faces
The summer is over, which means that many students have graduated and are leaving for pastures new. This is also the case for two of our beloved board members.
Chairman Rens Krijgsman has secured a scholarship for a PhD at Oxford University, and will be leaving us at the end of September. His duties will be taken over by Sander Molenaar, who will continue as our acting chairman.
Editor-in-chief Daan van Esch has recently attained his Master's degree, and graduated with distinction. He will also be leaving in September. The position of editor-in-chief will be taken up by Gabe Geert van Beijeren Bergen en Henegouwen.
Daan, Rens, congratulations to you both! We are sad to see you go, but thank you again for all the hard work you've put in over the past few years making Shilin possible. Have fun and good luck on your next adventures!

Open Vacancies - Shilin Board Members 2012 (Dutch text only)
Beste studenten,
Wie zoeken we?

Third issue Shilin
We are happy to announce that the third issue of Shilin will be out next week. For our subscribers in the Leiden area there will be a small stand in the Arsenaal building of Leiden University coming Tuesday the 6th from five o'clock onwards. Be sure to get your hands on this issue as it contains a series of fascinating new articles and sports a brand new bound cover. In this third issue, Ruben de Bie discusses the CCP's usage of 'communities' to counter rising individualisation. Moving 3000 years back in time, Willemijn van Noord debates the monetary function of Shang Cowrie shells. Back to present day International Relations, Petra Meijer reviews the efficacy of the ASEAN Regional Forum, closely followed by Laura Vermeeren who instead analyses the theme of immortality in Guo Pu's poetry. Lastly, Brechtje Spreeuwers discusses the nature of the post-1997 changes in the hukou system, while Tjalling R. Valdés Olmos seeks to emancipate International Relations theory by including non-western alternatives.

Projects
In addition to publishing two Shilin issues per year, members of the Shilin editorial team are also involved with a variety of student-led initiatives at the Department of Chinese Studies. We're working closely with the team behind the student conference in September 2011, and will be publishing the proceedings of this conference. We're also working to republish a few textbooks which are no longer in print. For example, we will republish Karel van der Leeuw's Het Chinese denken: geschiedenis van de Chinese filosofie in hoofdlijnen through print-on-demand early this summer. We are cooperating with Mr Van der Leeuw to realize this project. This summer, we will be releasing new editions of a few reference books on Classical Chinese that were originally published in the 1960s. For more updates on these projects please visit our website in the upcoming months.
